The Story
Cloves are among the most potent spices on earth — and among the most misunderstood. Ours are hand-picked at the precise moment the buds turn from green to pale pink, before they open and lose their essential oils. Dried on traditional mats in the coastal sun of Ambalangoda, they develop the deep, resinous warmth that has made Sri Lankan cloves the world's most prized for centuries.
Uses
Curries, rice, mulled drinks, baking, pickling
Pairs With
Cinnamon, star anise, black pepper, orange, red wine, beef, lamb
Health & Wellness
Cloves have one of the highest ORAC (antioxidant) scores of any food on earth. A single gram contains more antioxidants than most fruits and vegetables.
Eugenol — the primary compound in cloves — is a natural anaesthetic and anti-inflammatory. It has been used in dentistry for pain relief and is effective against headaches and joint pain.
Research suggests eugenol may help protect the liver from oxidative stress and reduce markers of liver damage, supporting healthy liver function.
Clove oil has demonstrated strong antimicrobial activity against a wide range of bacteria and fungi, including E. coli and Candida species.
Cloves are rich in manganese, a mineral essential for bone formation and the maintenance of bone density. A small amount provides a significant portion of daily requirements.
