Our Story — Niwandra Ceylon Spices

Our Story

Born from the Spice Island

For centuries, Sri Lanka has gifted the world its finest spices. Niwandra exists to honour that legacy — and bring it directly to your kitchen.

The Island

Sri Lanka — The Original Spice Island

Long before the term 'single-origin' became a marketing phrase, Sri Lanka was already the world's most celebrated source of cinnamon, pepper, cloves, and cardamom. Arab traders called it Serendib. Portuguese explorers risked everything to reach it. The Dutch and British built empires around its spices.

The island's unique geography — tropical monsoons, mineral-rich soils, and high-altitude microclimates — creates conditions that simply cannot be replicated anywhere else on earth. This is why Ceylon cinnamon tastes different. Why Ceylon pepper carries a complexity that mass-produced varieties never achieve.

How We Started

A Frustration That Became a Mission

Niwandra was founded after a simple, infuriating discovery: the cinnamon sold in most supermarkets around the world is not cinnamon at all. It is cassia — a cheaper, harsher bark from a different tree, often grown in bulk and blended with no regard for origin or quality.

We set out to fix that. Not by creating another premium brand, but by building direct relationships with the farming families in Sri Lanka who have been growing true Ceylon spices for generations. Every product we sell is traceable to a specific farm, a specific harvest, and a specific family.

"We don't source spices. We source stories — and the spices that come with them."

What We Stand For

Six Principles. No Exceptions.

Full Traceability

Every batch carries a farm code. You can trace your spice back to the exact garden it came from in Sri Lanka.

Botanical Authenticity

We source only true Ceylon varieties — verified by botanical testing. No cassia, no blends, no substitutes.

Fair Farmer Partnerships

We pay above-market rates directly to farming families, cutting out middlemen and ensuring sustainable livelihoods.

Zero Adulteration

No fillers, no artificial flavours, no preservatives. Pure spice — exactly as it left the farm.

Sustainable Cultivation

Our partner farms use traditional, low-impact growing methods that protect Sri Lanka's biodiversity and soil health.

Radical Transparency

We publish our sourcing regions, farming partners, and testing results. No secrets, no greenwashing.

Our Commitment

What We Promise You

Every jar of Niwandra spice represents a direct line between a Sri Lankan farming family and your kitchen. We will never compromise on authenticity, never blend origins, and never prioritise margin over quality. That is the Niwandra promise — and it is the only one we make.
